KATHMANDU, Aug 28: Arnico Panday, an influential leader of the main opposition Rastriya Swatantra Party, was arrested by the Nepal Police on Wednesday.
Panday, also a former member of the National Planning Commission, was charged with ‘character assassination’ by a woman via the social media platform WhatsApp and through email.

“He is accused of sending lewd messages, harassing and verbally abusing a woman via WhatsApp and email,” said SP Deepak Raj Awasthi of the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police. The woman had filed the charge to the bureau via email, acting upon which the police remanded him at the station yesterday.
SP Awasthi of the bureau told Republica that they are now preparing to take him to the government district attorney for further processing. Interestingly, a similar case involving leader Ain Mahar of the ruling CPN-UML had occurred at the same bureau on the same day. Mahar was presented to the court the same day and walked free on general date; however, Panday is only being presented today.
