KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has clarified that demands raised by the Gen-Z movement—such as amending the constitution and changing the system of governance—do not fall within the mandate of her government.

Addressing the nation on Thursday, PM Karki noted that while the Gen-Z movement has called for a directly elected executive head of state and the abolition of provinces, such matters are beyond the jurisdiction of the interim government. Appointed on September 12, Karki faced early calls to introduce a directly elected executive prime minister, but she stressed that her government’s sole mandate is to conduct elections and cannot pursue further constitutional changes.

Stating her commitment to operate strictly within constitutional limits, PM Karki urged the youth and all reform-minded citizens to use the upcoming elections to advance broader changes. “The issues of constitutional amendment and system reform raised by the Gen-Z movement lie outside the scope of the current interim government. I encourage the younger generation and all Nepalis seeking change to participate in the elections and pursue reforms through the constitutional process,” she said.

She also assured that the government is making every effort to provide prompt and effective services to the public. Karki emphasized that her administration, formed on the basis of the sacrifices made by Gen-Z protesters advocating for good governance and anti-corruption measures, has kept these goals at the forefront of its work.
