KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Nepal will not have a high-level delegation at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York this year, as the country grapples with sudden political changes and an incomplete cabinet.
Following the Gen-Z uprising, the government led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki has yet to assign a foreign minister. With the foreign ministry portfolio under the prime minister and the current political situation preventing her from traveling abroad, Nepal will be represented only by its Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Lok Bahadur Thapa.

According to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lok Bahadur Paudel Chhetri, Nepal will continue to emphasize its long-standing priorities at the assembly, including peace, inclusive development, climate justice, and social equity. Nepal plans to highlight dialogue over military intervention for conflict resolution, progress in achieving Sustainable Development Goals, and its commitment to ensuring the rights of marginalized communities, including women, children, Dalits, and indigenous groups.
As a climate-vulnerable nation, Nepal will call on developed countries to take responsibility for the impacts of climate change and stress the need for international cooperation in green development and environmental protection.
Nepal’s address at the UNGA is scheduled for Monday, September 19.
