Extending best wishes to Prime Minister Karki, the UN also reiterated its commitment to work with the Government of Nepal in promoting stability, human rights, and sustainable development.
Karki’s appointment comes in the backdrop of youth-led protests against corruption, nepotism, and social media restrictions. The movement on September 8 witnessed incidents of violence, vandalism, and arson, following the loss of several lives in security crackdowns.
Protesters targeted the parliament, Supreme Court, government offices, political party headquarters, media outlets, schools, and businesses. There were also instances of prison breakouts, and suspicions have been raised about infiltration by outside groups in some demonstrations.
