KATHMANDU, Aug 27: CPN-UML central member Ain Mahar, who was arrested in a defamation case on Wednesday, has been released on a general date after giving his statement. The District Attorney’s Office in Kathmandu completed taking his statement and released him in the evening.
Ram Hari Sharma, Deputy Attorney General and the office chief, confirmed Mahar’s release, stating that the remaining investigation will be conducted by the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police before any prosecution.
UML Central Member Mahar arrested on defamation case

Mahar was accused by Rashmila Dhami from Bajhang of violating Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act, 2063, for allegedly posting videos and photos on social media containing defamatory content, insults, or harassment targeting her. Following the complaint, the District Court of Kathmandu issued an arrest warrant, and Mahar appeared at the Cyber Bureau before being taken for questioning.
Under Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act, publishing content that spreads hatred, defames, harasses, or humiliates anyone—especially women—is prohibited. If found guilty, the accused can face a fine of up to Rs 100,000, imprisonment for up to five years, or both.
