KATHMANDU, Aug 27: Nepal Police on Wednesday arrested CPN-UML central member Ain Mahar on charges of character assassination of a woman.
Mahar, who had resigned from his position about a year ago in connection with the same case, appeared at the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police on Wednesday morning. The Kathmandu District Court had issued an arrest warrant against him on August 25.

Superintendent of Police Deepak Raj Aawasthi of the Cyber Bureau told Republica that Mahar voluntarily surrendered to the police. He said Mahar is charged with character assassination of a woman through digital means. “He is charged under Section 47 of the Electronic Transactions Act, as per the charge sheet we received via postal service,” Aawasthi said.
Police have taken Mahar to the Kathmandu District Court seeking judicial custody for further investigation.
Audio and visual materials containing lewd content were made public last year, in which a woman named Rashmila Kumari Dhami accused Mahar of abandoning her after an alleged physical relationship. Following the revelations, Mahar resigned from his position as a central committee member but was reappointed a few months later.
Mahar is considered a close ally of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
