KATHMANDU, May 7: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has accused the government of politicizing Nepal Rastra Bank by turning it into a bargaining ground for power-sharing among ruling parties.
Speaking during a special session of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, RSP lawmaker Dr Chanda Karki blamed the government for jeopardizing the country's economy by delaying the appointment of the central bank governor.

"We are allowing political deals to dictate leadership at a sensitive institution like Nepal Rastra Bank," Karki said. "Ruling parties are fighting over who gets to appoint the governor, leaving the central bank without direction. Their power-sharing struggle has pushed the national economy into uncertainty. The government has recklessly gambled with the country's financial future."
Calling the delay unacceptable, Dr Karki urged the government to immediately appoint a qualified, visionary, and fearless individual to lead the central bank based on merit, not political compromise.
"The governor's role is not just about designing monetary policy; it's also about ensuring financial discipline and long-term stability," she said. "Leaving the position vacant, even for a single day, is harmful-especially now, when the economy is off track. The government must act now."
She also expressed serious concern over the rising number of non-performing loans in banks and financial institutions and Nepal's continued presence on the FATF gray list, warning that the lack of leadership at Nepal Rastra Bank during such a critical time is dangerous.
