KAPILVASTU, Aug 30: Room to Read marked the 18th National Library Day by inaugurating 48 school libraries in three rural municipalities of Kapilvastu District. Of the newly established libraries, 33 are fully operational for students, while 15 still require minor seating arrangements before opening, the organization said in a press release.
According to the press release, the initiative supports the nationwide theme announced by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, “Our Library: Our Future,” which promotes quality education and literacy in Nepal. The libraries are designed to create child-friendly learning spaces, providing access to diverse books and resources that encourage curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning.

These new facilities are expected to benefit thousands of students, particularly in low-income communities, by fostering reading habits and enhancing literacy outcomes, the press release further stated. “Libraries are more than just spaces to access books-they are foundations for curiosity, creativity, and opportunity. By working closely with governments, schools, and communities, we continue to ensure that every child has the chance to learn, read, and thrive,” the press release quoted Pushkar Lal Shrestha, country director of Room to Read Nepal, as saying.
According to Room to Read, since its establishment in Nepal in 2000, it has set up 4,966 school libraries across 31 districts, distributed over 10.4 million quality reading materials, and implemented programs supporting children’s literacy and life skills development. The organization has impacted over 50 million children across 28 countries, working to eliminate illiteracy and gender inequality worldwide.
