NID Chief Thapa set to retire, Karki and Joshi top contenders for the post

The NID’s rules stipulate a three-year term for the Chief Investigation Director position. Thapa was appointed as the department’s head on September 13, 2022.

KATHMANDU, Aug 29: Hutraj Thapa, chief of the National Investigation Department (NID), is set to retire in the next two weeks after completing his three-year term. According to the NID’s regulations, he will go on mandatory retirement on September 13, 2025.



The NID’s rules stipulate a three-year term for the Chief Investigation Director position. Thapa was appointed as the department’s head on September 13, 2022.

Thapa, who joined the NID as an investigation officer in 1996 AD, surpassed his batchmates to become the NID chief. His batchmates, Tekendra Karki and Om Prakash Joshi, are considered the leading contenders to succeed him. Karki currently leads the Provincial Coordination Division and the Intelligence Division, while Joshi serves as the Administration Division chief. Both joined the NID alongside Thapa.


Karki, who oversees the NID’s main intelligence operations, is the front-runner for the position, with Joshi as the other primary candidate.


The NID has a nationwide presence, with its headquarters located in the Singha Durbar complex. The NID manages 2,265 staff and agents, who are responsible for collecting intelligence. District in-charges and departmental agents assigned by the central leadership also provide information to the NID.
