KATHMANDU, July 29: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Hitendra Dev Shakya has reached Madhesh Province after inspecting the Chanauli Distribution Centre in Chitwan to address electricity supply issues caused by rising demand amid a prolonged dry spell.
Electricity demand has surged not only in Chitwan but also across parts of Madhesh Province due to the lack of rainfall. In several areas, NEA systems are struggling to meet the soaring demand. Taking this into account, Shakya, accompanied by a technical team, traveled to Madhesh to assess the situation.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, during a recent visit to Madhesh, pledged the installation of 500 deep tube wells to address the ongoing irrigation and drinking water crisis. The NEA team's visit also aims to evaluate potential technical challenges in ensuring a stable power supply for these tube wells.
The NEA said MD Shakya held discussions with heads of distribution centers in Madhesh to explore effective ways to electrify irrigation systems and support affected communities. He also gathered input on the infrastructure needed to support the planned tube wells.
“NEA is committed to supporting the government in resolving water and irrigation problems,” Shakya said. “But the government must ensure adequate budget allocation. I am here in the field to understand the reality firsthand and to ensure that NEA is not a hurdle in this crisis.”
