KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Nawal Kishor Sah Sudi has vowed to guarantee the participation of the disabled persons in policy and decision-making levels.

In his address to a programme organized by the Society of Deaf Blind Parents Nepal on Tuesday, Minister Sudi said he would take initiatives to practically enforce the 'Act Relating to the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, 2074 BS'. People living with disabilities (PWD) can have representation in person or through the organizations and associations they are affiliated with, according to him.

PWD's access to various services and facilities would be ensured, he said, adding that they have the right to participate in the election and even get elected through the voting. Minister Sudi further reminded that the time has come to empower the PWD so that they can claim and enjoy the political, social, economic and cultural rights.

Society Chairman Lhakpa Nuru Sherpa claimed the Act on the rights of PWD had ensured PWD's access to educational institutes, residences, workplaces and buildings, but the practical aspect was very poor.

The Society, established in 2005, has been identifying the people deprived of sight and hearing and providing them with assistance, including training for their empowerment and enjoyment of rights.
