Govt invites application to appoint new NIA chairperson

The government has initiated a process of appointing a new chairperson of the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA) after the dismissal of former NIA chairperson Sharad Ojha.

KATHMANDU, Aug 30: The government has initiated a process of appointing a new chairperson of the Nepal Insurance Authority (NIA) after the dismissal of former NIA chairperson Sharad Ojha.



Ojha was found guilty of presenting fraudulent documents for his appointment. Ojha faced a writ petition at the Supreme Court, while the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) also grilled him on the case.

Issuing a public notice on Saturday, the recommendation committee has invited applications from eligible Nepali citizens for the position. “Interested candidates can submit a confidential letter to the Financial Sector Management and Institutions Coordination Division of the Ministry of Finance within seven days of office hours,” reads the notice.


At least a master's degree in insurance, finance, banking, commerce, management, public administration, statistics, mathematics, economics or law has been set as the minimum qualifications required for the post. In addition, the candidate should have experience of more than five years of senior managerial position in the relevant field. 


The recommendation committee will shortlist three nominees, who are needed to present their action plan and to attend an interview. Based on the marks of the candidates, the Council of Ministers will appoint the top candidate for the coveted position.


Earlier, the Cabinet meeting on Monday formed a recommendation committee led by Vice-Chairperson of the National Planning Commission Prof Shivraj Adhikari to start the process of appointing a new NIA chairperson. Finance Secretary Ghanshyam Upadhyay and expert member Khomraj Kharel are also part of the committee.
