KATHMANDU, Sep 4: Chandrakuber Khapung was conferred the insignia of Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Thursday amidst a special function held at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Home Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi decorated Khapung with the insignia, formally making him the 32nd chief of Nepal Police, an institution comprising around 80,000 personnel.

A cabinet meeting held on August 29, appointed Khapung as the IGP. His tenure, however, is expected to be short-lived as he is due to take compulsory retirement on December 9 after completing 30 years of service. This could change if Parliament endorses the new Police Bill, which is currently under consideration at the House of Representatives. The proposed legislation replaces the 30-year service cap with retirement provisions based on age and tenure.

A native of Tehrathum, the 55-year-old Khapung began his policing career in 1995. Over the years, he has headed the prime minister’s security detail, overseen administration at police headquarters and served in two United Nations peacekeeping missions in Haiti.

He has also received professional training in Italy, South Korea, Vietnam and China. Khapung previously led the Kathmandu Valley Crime Division and later commanded the Koshi Province police office.
