DADELDHURA, Feb 25: A man in Dadeldhura lived with a small pair of scissors in his stomach for 6 months until the tool was removed by doctors in India. During treatment, Team Hospital in Dadeldhura had left a 5 cm long scissors in 42-year old Dev Bahadur Sarki´s intestine.

As he did not recover even after 6 months of surgery at Team Hospital, Sarki went to India for further treatment where he came to know about the scissors in his stomach. [break]

“He was suffering from severe stomach ache and his condition did not improve even after surgery at Dadeldhura. Then we went to India,” Sarki´s son Dharma said. “Indian doctors found that there was a pair of small scissors in his stomach.”

According to Dharma, the doctors did not start treatment until they were told that Sarki´s case was earlier handled by Team Hospital in Nepal.

Sharki was taken to Turnamax Surgical Hospital in Sitaragunj in India 3 weeks ago. In the medical reports the doctors have mentioned about the scissors in his stomach. “The doctors were quite surprised to see the scissors,” said Sarki´s son-in-law Prakash Sarki. “We had to pay additional charges due to that.”

Sarki, who was suffering from stomach ache, had been admitted to Team hospital on 12 July, 2011. Doctor Shiva Shirmal had performed his intestinal surgery on 15 July. The scissors were removed during his second operation on 8 February 2012 at Turnamax hospital.

Team hospital has admitted its fault. “The scissors might have remained inside,” the hospital´s acting administrator Prithvi KC said. “But we cannot go into details as the surgeon is not in Dadeldhura right now,” he added.

Following the incident, the locals had filed a case against the hospital at the District Administration Office (DAO). A meeting held over the matter on Friday at DAO decided to carry out further investigation.

“As for now it has been decided that the hospital would provide Rs 50,000 to the victim. The hospital is ready to give the amount,” said Chief District Officer Prem Lal Lamichhane. “An investigation team would be formed in a day or two for further investigation.”

Meanwhile, the locals have demanded punishment for the involved health practitioners of the Team Hospital.
