6,984 prisoners returned, 7,572 still at large

KATHMANDU, Sept 23: A total of 6,984 inmates who escaped after the Gen Z protest turned violent have been brought back to prisons, while 7,572 remain at large, according to the Department of Prison Management.



Director Chomendra Neupane said that 656 prisoners returned to custody over the past two days alone, noting that inmates continue to come back daily.

During the September 9 unrest, prisons across the country were vandalized and set on fire, allowing 14,556 prisoners to flee. At the time, 15,525 inmates chose to stay behind.


The department reported that the fugitives escaped from 28 prisons and nine juvenile reform centers. Police arrested some, while many surrendered voluntarily.


From juvenile homes alone, 963 youths escaped. Police added that about 2,000 detainees awaiting trial are also still missing. Ten inmates have died since the breakout.
