628 fugitive prisoners returned on Wednesday alone

Chomendra Neupane, the department director, said Wednesday marked the highest single-day return of prisoners. He added that most returned voluntarily, while some were apprehended and brought back.

KATHMANDU, Sept 25: On Wednesday, 628 prisoners who had escaped during the Gen-Z protests on September 8–9 were returned to jail in a single day. According to the Prison Management Department, a total of 7,735 prisoners have been returned to date, up from 7,107 previously.

During the Gen-Z protests, a total of 14,556 prisoners had fled from jails nationwide, where the total prison population is 30,640. On September 9, protests led to vandalism and arson at several jails, enabling prisoners to escape.
