UDAYAPUR, Aug 3: Incessant rainfall has caused widespread flooding and displacement in multiple districts across Nepal. In Udayapur, a Musahar (Sada) settlement in Triyuga Municipality-13 was inundated after 14 continuous hours of rain from Saturday evening to early Sunday morning. Four households were displaced and relocated to temporary shelters with the help of local authorities.
The downpour also submerged Baruwa Bus Park, including the District Traffic Office and vehicles parked in the compound. Low-lying areas of Gaighat, including older houses built below current drainage levels, have been severely affected. Roads and drainage systems under construction—funded by a World Bank loan—also suffered damage in Wards 10, 11, 12, and 13.

Meanwhile in Parbat district, the Kaligandaki River reached its highest level this year. According to gauging station reader Krishna Prasad Subedi, the river peaked at 7.40 meters early Sunday. While the water level has begun to recede, downstream settlements remain at risk.
Several areas in Parbat, Syangja, and Gulmi are on high alert, including markets and riverbanks in Kushma, Modi Beni, Setibeni, and surrounding areas. The world’s largest Shaligram Shila—located at the tri-junction of the three districts—has also been submerged. Structures around the holy site, including embankments and visitor pathways, have been severely damaged.
Kaligandaki A hydropower dam had opened all gates to manage the river flow. However, rising levels of Kaligandaki and Seti rivers continue to threaten markets and over 200 residents and traders. Local residents recalled a similar disaster 16 years ago that displaced dozens of families.
Authorities in both districts have urged residents in flood-prone zones to remain on high alert. The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology had issued early warnings, noting that the Triyuga River crossed the danger level by 2 am on Sunday.
