KATHMANDU, Aug 12: Tribhuvan University (TU) has formally requested government security, citing safety concerns after vandalism and threats from a student organization.
According to TU officials, the university has urged the government to ensure a secure environment for staff to move around freely and work from their offices. Letters have been sent to the District Administration Office, Kathmandu, while Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and Education Minister Raghuji Pant have also been asked to help arrange security measures.

The incident prompting this request occurred on Monday, when members of the All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union (Revolutionary) vandalized the Registrar’s and Rector’s offices, demanding a reduction in tuition fees. Clashes broke out with police during the protest, leaving several students injured.
Nine months ago, programs in International Relations, Conflict and Peace Studies, Social Work, and Gender Studies were merged into TU’s Central Department. The protesting student union has been demanding a fee reduction for these merged programs and has been staging a sit-in in front of Vice-Chancellor Deepak Aryal’s office door for the past 20 days, preventing him from working in his office.
