KATHMANDU, June 8: Doctors at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj, have successfully performed Nepal's first sex reassignment surgery.

The medical team operated on a 25-year-old transgender person from Janakpur, reconstructing female reproductive organs using tissue from the patient's male genitalia.

The Department of Plastic Surgery conducted the procedure during a special surgical camp organized for the transgender community from May 26 to 29. As part of the camp, doctors also performed facial and breast surgeries.

Hospital Spokesperson and Associate Professor Dr Gopal Sedhai said the hospital will now offer gender-affirming surgeries regularly, ending the need for patients to travel abroad for such services.

"Gender reassignment is a sensitive, complex, and costly procedure. Having this service available in Nepal will bring significant relief to the transgender community," he said. "It offers a vital opportunity for individuals to realize their gender identity."

Foreign plastic surgeon Dr Eliza Hamidian Zahromi led the surgery, with coordination from department head Dr Jayanman Shrestha. The hospital's full plastic surgery and anesthesia teams participated in the operation.

Dr Shrestha announced that the hospital will establish a dedicated "Gender-Affirming Clinic" to provide these services on a regular basis.
