Sugarcane farmers stage protest demanding govt support (With photos)

They urged immediate payment of Rs 1.6 billion in subsidies owed for sugarcane sold in 2024/25.

KATHMANDU, Aug 25: The Sugarcane Farmers’ Struggle Committee held a peaceful sit-in protest at Maitighar Mandala, demanding the government honor its commitments to the sugarcane sector.

The farmers protested the government’s decision to cut subsidies that have been provided since 1952 AD and highlighted the absence of budget allocation for sugarcane subsidies in the current fiscal year 2025/26. They urged immediate payment of Rs 1.6 billion in subsidies owed for sugarcane sold in 2024/25.


The farmers also demanded that sugarcane prices be set through consultations among farmers, industry representatives, and the government to ensure fair valuation.
