KATHMANDU, May 5: Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Devraj Ghimire has directed the government to initiate an investigation into the suspicious death of Nepali student Prisha Shah, who was studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Odisha, India, and to ensure the safety of all Nepali students studying abroad.

In Monday’s meeting of the HoR, Speaker Ghimire called for an investigation to determine the facts surrounding Shah’s death. He stated, “The series of deaths of students who went abroad for studies with hopes of a bright future is a serious issue, closely linked to the nation’s sensitivity and responsibility. I direct the government to show deep concern regarding this incident, investigate the truth, engage in dialogue with the concerned parties, and provide necessary judicial assistance to the family.” He also instructed the government to ensure the safety of other Nepali students studying abroad.

During the emergency session of the HoR, several lawmakers raised concerns about Shah’s death, drawing the government's attention through parliamentary procedures. It was noted that just a few months ago, another Nepali student, Prakriti Lamsal, had also died under suspicious circumstances at the same university. With a similar incident repeating itself, students studying there are now feeling increasingly unsafe, according to lawmakers.

Members of Parliament, including Devendra Paudel, Dr. Amresh Kumar Singh, Ram Krishna Yadav, and Nirmala Koirala, among others, brought the issue of Prisha Shah’s death to the government’s attention through parliament.

Similarly, CPN (Maoist Centre) MP Devendra Paudel has demanded that the government establish emergency desks at the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure the safety of Nepali students abroad.

Speaking during the emergency session of the HoR on Monday, he stated that the tragic death of Prakriti Lamsal at KIIT had not yet been fully addressed when another similar incident occurred.
