KATHMANDU, Sept 18: Seven charred human remains have been recovered following the violent demonstrations called by the ‘Gen Z’ movement on September 8 and 9. The bodies were discovered during cleanup operations at the Bhaktapur and Koteshwor areas, including Bhaktabhetni supermarkets, where fires had destroyed structures.
The remains, now at the Forensic Department of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, are completely burned, leaving only skeletal material. According to authorities at the forensic department, traditional identification methods are ineffective due to the condition of the bodies, and only DNA testing can confirm their identities.

DNA analysis involves extracting samples from bones or teeth, amplifying them through PCR processes, and matching the profiles with parents’ DNA. However, if remains are excessively burned, even DNA testing may not be possible.
Police have confirmed that no family members have come forward so far. The forensic department is preparing to collect DNA samples once authorized, but the remains will not be handed over until identification is confirmed. Authorities have urged anyone with missing relatives during the demonstrations to contact the Kathmandu District Police or call the control number 100.
