KATHMANDU, April 17: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued an interim order to present four Bhutanese refugees currently in police custody in Jhapa, Kakarvitta, before the court on April 24. Additionally, the apex court also asked authorities not to deport them until that date.
Refugee Narayan Kumar Subedi filed a writ of habeas corpus at the SC on Wednesday, demanding the release of Bhutanese refugees who have been in the custody of the Jhapa Police for the last 20 days. Hearing the petition, the SC issued the order on Thursday.

A single bench of Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal issued the interim order, directing the Department of Immigration and the Immigration Office, Kakarvitta, to coordinate and ensure the presence of the refugees in the court, and not to deport them until that time.
The four refugees were deported by the United States to Bhutan and were sent back to Nepal by Bhutan on March 28. They were deported to Nepal by Bhutan with their documents confiscated and are being held in custody on charges of entering Nepal illegally.
Ashish Subedi, Roshan Tamang, and Santosh Darji have been in police custody in Kakarvitta since March 29, while Ashok Gurung has been in custody since April 1.
