KATHMANDU, March 9: UCPN (Maoist) spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota claimed on Saturday that the opposition parties Nepali Congress and CPN-UML do not want to go for fresh elections.

Speaking at a regular meeting with journalists at party head office, Perisdanda, he said that the main obstruction to consensus was the unwillingness of the opposition parties over the issue of elections. [break]

"The main reason for the failure to reach consensus was the unwillingness of the opposition parties to go for fresh elections while our party (UCPN (Maoist)) presented itself as very flexible," said Sapkota.[break]He also said the opposition parties are raising technical issues to hide their unwillingness to go for elections.

He also spoke of "the unnatural stance of the NC and UML, who want to move in accordance with the old laws and just repeat the international law," said Sapkota adding the circumstances had changed.

"How can we find a solution with the mind set of yesterday," said Sapkota.

He also accused second generation leaders of the NC and UML of arguing against the top leaders, adding that all agreements are broken by the NC and UML second generation leaders.

According to Sapkota, the second and third generation leaders broke the agreement at the last hour.

Talking about the rank issue for former Maoist combatants, he said that the parties had already reached agreement to provide the ranks of colonel to one and lieutenant-colonels to two.

Sapkota argued that the NC and UML are trying to revoke past agreements, adding, "Revocation of past agreements cannot be acceptable".
