Road accidents claim 95 lives in a year in Jhapa

JHAPA, July 19: A total of 1,296 road accidents were recorded in Jhapa district during the fiscal year 2024/25, resulting in the deaths of 95 people. According to official data, 1,934 individuals sustained minor injuries while 139 were seriously injured.



Ganesh Paudel, Inspector at the District Traffic Police Office in Jhapa, stated that 52,875 drivers were penalized during the year, generating a revenue of Rs 39,555,560. Among them, 3,174 drivers were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol, leading to fines exceeding Rs 1.8 million.

To raise awareness, traffic rule classes were provided to 8,461 school-level students across the district, and 1,250 individuals received training focused on drink-driving awareness, Paudel said. He added that the office has adopted tech-friendly systems like the Traffic Violation Record System (TVRS) and an online fine payment system.

The traffic improvement campaign was conducted in collaboration with local governments, schools, hospitals, media outlets, and community centers. Programs targeting students from grades 6 to 10, auto and city drivers, and other community members aimed to deliver a message of collective responsibility for road safety, Inspector Paudel added.
