Prakash Man Singh signals intent to run for NC Presidency again

Singh said, “I started as an ordinary party worker. I have served as Kathmandu District President, Central Committee member, elected General Secretary, and Vice President. I have also previously contested for the party presidency. Except for the roles of party president and prime minister, I have held almost every responsibility. So, you can guess what position I am aiming for now.”

KATHMANDU, July 19: Former Vice President of the Nepali Congress and current Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development, Prakash Man Singh, has expressed his aspiration to contest for the party presidency once again. In an interview published Saturday by the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), Singh hinted at his ambition to lead the party.

Responding to a question about his desired position in the upcoming general convention of the party, Singh said, “I started as an ordinary party worker. I have served as Kathmandu District President, Central Committee member, elected General Secretary, and Vice President. I have also previously contested for the party presidency. Except for the roles of party president and prime minister, I have held almost every responsibility. So, you can guess what position I am aiming for now.”

Singh confirmed that internal consultations are underway. “I am currently in discussion with party colleagues. I’ve always fulfilled my responsibilities with honesty,” he said. “When I visit districts and meet with party members, many tell me they want to see me as party president.”

Reflecting on his political journey, Singh said he never entered politics with the aim of becoming an MP or minister. “We entered politics not just to endure hardship but with the awareness that we might even lose our lives. We joined politics to empower the people and to end autocratic rule in the country,” he remarked.

Singh recalled the difficult circumstances when he first became politically active. “We couldn’t even organize public events. There were arrests, surveillance, and our party was banned. Those days were far from easy,” he said.

He further noted that the political climate became especially challenging after the king seized power and democracy came under direct threat.

With his extensive experience and deep roots in the party, Singh's reentry into the race for party leadership could signal a new chapter in the internal dynamics of the Nepali Congress as it prepares for its next general convention.
