ROME, Sept 2: Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani today met with his Palestinian counterpart, Varsin Shaheen, who is on a visit to Italy, to discuss the situation in the Palestinian territories.
The Palestinian minister called for practical steps to end the aggression on the Gaza Strip and for the recognition of the State of Palestine to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East.

For his part, the Italian minister affirmed his country's commitment to supporting the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and to establishing their independent state. He noted that Italy would work toward recognizing the State of Palestine at the appropriate time.
He also expressed his rejection of Israeli policies of displacement and aggression. He affirmed Rome's readiness to work with international partners to deliver humanitarian aid and contribute to the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip.
