One more NA peacekeeper dies in Lebanon

KATHMANDU, May 19: With the sudden demise of a Nepal Army soldier serving with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon last Thursday, the death toll of peacekeepers has reached 59.



According to the Directorate of Public Relations (DPR) of the Nepal Army, Lance Corporal Deepak Bahadur Thapa died on May 16. He was a member of the Rana Bam Battalion deployed under UNIFIL Mission, Lebanon of NA´s peace-keeping force for the last two months. [break]



NA Spokesperson Brigadier General Suresh Sharma said Magar died of heart-related problems. Quoting other peacekeepers deployed in the same mission, he said, “He fainted all of a sudden before going to bed and was rushed to the hospital immediately. But he was pronounced dead soon after he was admitted.”



Magar´s dead body was brought to Nepal Sunday via Qatar Airlines and was offered a military honor amidst a ceremony at Kali Prasad Battalion at Goucharan, Kathmandu. The ceremony was attended by his family members, NA generals and other officers and representatives from the UN resident mission in Nepal and the defense ministry.



According to DPR, the number of Nepali peacekeepers deployed in various missions across the world has reached 59 since 1985.

According to Birendra Peace Operation Training Center, as many as 28 NA peacekeepers have died in Lebanon, five in Democratic Republic of Congo, and six in Somaliya.



Likewise, three NA peacekeepers have died in Yugoslavia, three in Sierra Leone, three in Burundi, nine in Haiti and two in other missions.
