KATHMANDU, May 4: A new executive committee was formed under the leadership of Mahesh Shrestha through a meeting held on Saturday, as the rift between the current executive committee of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and the national committees around the world deepened.

Mahesh Shrestha, who is associated with the Nepali Congress (NC) party, was elected unopposed as the president during the Unity Convention organized by a high-level committee led by former NRNA president Shesh Ghale. Shrestha had previously lost the president’s position to Dr Badri KC in the 10th General Convention. In that election, RK Sharma came second, while Shrestha secured the third position.

According to sources, Mahesh Shrestha was unanimously elected as the president due to the active initiative and pressure from Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba. Minister Deuba had submitted a petition to the Supreme Court last week, stating that unity through the convention proposed by the Shesh Ghale group would not be possible. However, after an agreement was reached to make Shrestha the president at the unity convention held on Saturday, she also participated in the inauguration ceremony.

According to the second order of the Supreme Court, the executive committee led by Dr Badri KC will be allowed to function until October. However, after the Unity Convention, two separate executive committees have now been established within the NRNA.

In the new executive committee led by Mahesh Shrestha, the vice-presidents include Khagendra Neupane, Lok Prasad Dahal, Sunil Kumar Sah, Manoj Kumar Shrestha, Bishwas Limbu, and Buddhisagar Subedi. Junu Gurung has been elected as the female vice-president, and Baburam Lama has been elected as the general secretary.

Similarly, the secretaries include Tanka Gaire, Chintamani Sapkota, Tilak Gaire, and Devki Gurung, while Thakur Prasad Dhungana has been unanimously selected as the treasurer. Krishna Prasad Pokhrel has been chosen as the deputy treasurer, as informed by the Chief Election Commissioner, Senior Advocate Gopal Krishna Ghimire.

Meanwhile, the executive committee, led by Dr Badri KC, is preparing to announce its official stance in a press conference on Monday.
