KATHMANDU, May 26: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken serious exception to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's recent remarks about the protest that the pro-monarchy United People's Movement Committee plans to launch in Kathmandu from May 29.

In a statement issued on Monday, the NHRC warned Prime Minister Oli against making provocative statements.

The Commission criticized Prime Minister Oli for publicly issuing a directive-style remark, stating, "Kathmandu must remain under the control of the CPN-UML from 11 am to 2 pm on May 29."

The NHRC reminded the government and security agencies of their duty to maintain peace and security. It argued that when the head of government makes such statements, it undermines the spirit of the rule of law.

Reaffirming democratic principles, the NHRC stated that every group, individual, or party has the right to express their views and stage demonstrations. It warned that using provocative language to target opposing views violates the core principles and values of human rights.

NHRC Spokesperson Dr. Tikaram Pokharel stated in the press release, "Every individual, group, or party has the freedom of expression, but making remarks that target others and incite confrontation is unacceptable."

The NHRC urged all parties to exercise restraint in their statements, avoid making negative comments, and keep protests peaceful. It also called on security agencies to take special responsibility for maintaining peace and security in the capital and other regions.
