Nepal’s inflation moderates to 4.06 pc in last FY, down from 5.44 pc

KATHMANDU, Aug 24: The annual average consumer price inflation pacified to 4.06 percent in fiscal year (FY) 2024/25, down from 5.44 percent in the previous FY.



The report entitled ‘Current Macroeconomic and Financial Situation of Nepal’ unveiled by Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Sunday shows that the annual inflation rate declined due to the moderated price hikes of both the food and non-food items. The annual average food and beverage category inflation stood at 4.69 percent in the last FY, compared to 6.47 percent in FY 2023/24.  


Under the food and beverage category, the annual average consumer price index of vegetable sub-category increased 10.71 percent, ghee and oil 8.72 percent, pulses and legumes 7.90 percent and cereal grains and their products 6.13 percent while the annual average consumer price index of spices decreased 2.62 percent and that of meat and fish was down 0.34 percent.

Likewise, the annual average non-food and services category inflation stood at 3.71 percent, down from 4.64 percent in the review period. In this category, the annual average consumer price index of miscellaneous goods and services sub-category increased 9.39 percent, clothes and footwear 6.09 percent, alcoholic drinks 5.65 percent, furnishing and household equipment 4.78 percent and tobacco products 4.37 percent.


Regionwise, the annual average consumer price inflation in FY 2024/25 in the Kathmandu Valley, Terai, hill and mountain regions stood at 3.77 percent, 4.14 percent, 3.86 percent and 4.89 percent, respectively, according to the NRB.


Provincewise,  Koshi recorded the highest annual average consumer price inflation at 5.46 percent, followed by Sudurpashchim at 5.02 percent. Madhesh stood at 4.14 percent, Lumbini at 3.70 percent, Bagmati at 3.57 percent, Gandaki at 3.32 percent, and Karnali at 3.31 percent.


Meanwhile, the year-on-year consumer price inflation in one month as of mid-July 2025 stood at 2.20 percent compared to 3.57 percent a year ago. Similarly, the average price of food and beverage category inflation stood at a negative of 1.19 percent in mid-July 2025 compared to 4.04 percent a year ago. Last month, non-food and services category inflation however increased to 4.12 percent, from 3.26 percent a year ago.
