The powerful quake, which struck Myanmar late last month, caused widespread destruction across several regions, leaving thousands injured and overwhelming the country’s health infrastructure. In response, the Government of Nepal swiftly deployed a specialized medical team under the Nepali Army to assist the friendly nation in its hour of need.

Departing on April 1 aboard a Nepali Army aircraft, the team—comprising 12 medical professionals and 4 logistics support staff—established a fully functional health camp in Yamethin city of Mandalay. The team included surgical and orthopedic specialists, medical officers, nurses and paramedics, all equipped for rapid medical response in crisis zones.

Over the course of their 10-day mission, the team performed 133 surgeries, treated 248 orthopedic cases, and provided outpatient services to a remarkable 965 individuals—many of whom had sustained injuries during the quake or were suffering due to the collapse of local healthcare facilities, according to Nepali Army’s Public Relations and Information.

In the aftermath of the March 28 earthquake, the Government of Nepal dispatched a medical team from the Nepali Army to Myanmar. Alongside the team, 41 tons of relief materials were also sent to support the quake-affected communities.

Following the 2015 Gorkha earthquake in Nepal, the Government of Myanmar had extended its support by sending relief materials to Kathmandu. Government officials stated that Nepal’s recent assistance is a gesture of solidarity and reciprocity in Myanmar’s time of crisis.

The deployment underscores Nepal’s growing commitment to regional humanitarian support and the strength of its long-standing friendship with Myanmar. It also highlights the evolving role of the Nepali Army not only as a defense force, but as a capable humanitarian responder in times of international crisis.
