Nepal to remain Unified Socialist chairperson despite court case

KATHMANDU, June 28: The CPN (Unified Socialist) has concluded that Madhav Kumar Nepal will continue to serve as the party’s chairperson. A meeting of the party’s Secretariat held on Friday concluded that Nepal should continue as chairperson, stating that the case filed against him was politically motivated.



"The Comrade Chairperson will continue in the role. He has been working as the party chairman," said Vice-Chairperson Prakash Jwala after the meeting. "He has been chairing the meetings as chairperson."

Regarding the leader of the parliamentary party, Jwala said a meeting of the parliamentary party would make the decision. “As for the leader of the parliamentary party, a meeting will be held, and the decision will be made there,” he said.


On June 5, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) filed a corruption case against Nepal and 93 others over the alleged transaction of land in Kavre that violated the land ceiling exemption. The land was registered in the name of Patanjali Yogpeeth and Ayurvedic Company during Nepal’s tenure as prime minister in 2009.


In Nepal’s case, a fine and punishment equivalent to Rs 185.85 million in losses have been demanded.


Following the filing of the corruption case, he was suspended from his position as a member of parliament. However, the Special Court ordered his release on bail of Rs 3.5 million on June 25 after the detention hearing.
