BHIMDATTA, Sept 3: Authorities in Kanchanpur district have heightened vigilance after bird flu cases were confirmed in India’s Uttarakhand and its adjoining regions.

The District Bird Flu Control Committee, Kanchanpur, has tightened restrictions on the import and export of birds and poultry products at border points and launched awareness campaigns in border municipalities.

Shyam Khadka, head of the District Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Expert Center, said awareness drives and preventive measures are being carried out in border municipalities including Dodhara Chandani, Belauri, Punarbas, Bhimdatta, and Beldandi. “Open borders and cheaper prices make illegal imports common, raising the risk of bird flu transmission into Nepal,” he warned.

The committee has imposed a complete ban on the import of Indian poultry into Nepal. In a meeting held on Tuesday, it decided to strictly prohibit the transport of birds and poultry products through border areas of Kanchanpur. Security forces, veterinary offices, and quarantine representatives will conduct surprise inspections to ensure compliance.

Officials have urged poultry farmers to immediately report symptoms such as sudden chicken deaths, drooping, or loss of appetite to veterinary authorities. If the virus spreads, all poultry in the affected areas may need to be culled, Khadka said.

Strict action will be taken against anyone found smuggling poultry or related products into Nepal, the committee stated.
