Nepal imports gold worth over Rs 5 billion in 10 months

The trend of Nepali returnees bringing gold and silver jewelry from abroad has experienced a noticeable rise. In the ten months of the current Fiscal Year (FY) 2024/25, Nepali returnees have brought jewelry worth over Rs 5 billion.

KATHMANDU, May 22: The trend of Nepali returnees bringing gold and silver jewelry from abroad has experienced a noticeable rise. In the ten months of the current Fiscal Year (FY) 2024/25, Nepali returnees have brought jewelry worth over Rs 5 billion.



The trend of bringing gold jewelry from abroad has increased due to a reduction in prices, with gold items now being up to Rs 30,000 cheaper per tola.

According to the Department of Customs, by the end of Baisakh (mid-April) in the current FY, 209 kg of gold worth Rs 2.49 billion and 19,030 kg of silver worth Rs 2.67 billion were imported.


In the same period last year, the import of gold jewelry was valued at Rs 1.83 billion, and silver items at Rs 778.3 million.


While gold imports have decreased, the import of jewelry has increased. In the current FY, the total import of gold reached Rs 17.12 billion, and silver imports amounted to Rs 3.54 billion.
