KATHMANDU, June 9: Opposition parties have begun discussions on a middle-ground proposal advanced by the Nepali Congress (NC) to resolve the ongoing stalemate over the visit visa scandal.

The CPN (Maoist Center) and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) have blocked parliamentary proceedings since May 27, demanding the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak and the formation of a parliamentary investigation committee over his alleged involvement in the visa scam.

Although the government managed to present the national budget on May 29 as mandated, the obstruction has stalled all subsequent legislative businesses including crucial budget deliberations.

On Sunday evening, the NC submitted a proposal to the opposition, calling for full cooperation with the ongoing investigation being conducted by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA). The proposal also includes forming a separate committee to recommend reforms and solutions to address systemic issues within the immigration system after the investigation concludes.

The CPN (Unified Socialist) and Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) have reportedly responded positively to the proposal. However, RSP leaders maintain their stance, insisting that the home minister must resign and a parliamentary probe must be formed.

Despite the RSP's firm position, NC leaders remain optimistic. They claim that the broader opposition response has been constructive and express confidence that the deadlock will be resolved starting today. The next meeting of the House of Representatives is scheduled for 2 pm.
