KATHMANDU, Sept 12: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Thapa has called for a thorough investigation into the incidents of September 8 and 9, stating that the NC itself will take the initiative.

In a video address released on Friday, General Secretary Thapa said the events of September 8 were unforeseen and left a stain on the party’s image. “You and I were not in government, but our party was. Our face is tainted. We cannot just wipe the mirror; we must cleanse our own face,” he said, stressing that the NC must apologize to the nation and work to heal the wound.

He further said the damage caused on September 9 was incalculable. “We cannot even estimate the losses to our heritage sites and party offices,” he said. According to him, party President Sher Bahadur Deuba and several senior leaders were also subjected to physical attacks, while houses of several NC leaders were deliberately targeted with arson and vandalism.

Thapa said public outrage was natural, but intentional acts of violence were punishable and must be dealt with under the law. “Once a new government is formed, the Nepali Congress will take the lead in ensuring that every inhumane and cruel incident of those two days is investigated,” he said, adding that all perpetrators, regardless of who they are, should face legal consequences.
