Mumbai reach IPL Qualifier 2, beating Gujarat

KATHMANDU, May 31: Mumbai Indians defeated Gujarat Titans by 20 runs to advance to Qualifier 2. Led by Hardik Pandya, Mumbai will now face Punjab Kings on June 1 in Ahmedabad.



In the eliminator match played on Friday in New Chandigarh, Mumbai Indians won the toss and chose to bat first. They scored 228 runs for the loss of five wickets in 20 overs. Gujarat responded with 208 runs for six wickets in their allotted overs. Sai Sudarshan top-scored for Gujarat with 80 runs.


Gujarat started poorly. Captain Shubman Gill scored only one run before Trent Boult dismissed him. Kusal Mendis then came to the crease but got out via hit wicket. He shared a 64-run partnership off 34 balls with Sai Sudarshan, contributing 20 runs himself. Sudarshan then partnered with Washington Sundar, and they added 84 runs in 44 balls. Sundar scored 48, Sudarshan 80, while Rutherford and Shahrukh Khan contributed 24 and 13 runs, respectively.

Rahul Tewatia remained unbeaten on 16, and Rashid Khan was not out without scoring. Trent Boult took two wickets for Mumbai Indians, while Jasprit Bumrah, Richard Gleeson, Mitchell Santner, and Ashwini Kumar took one wicket each.


Earlier, the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Johnny Bairstow gave Mumbai a strong start with an 84-run partnership for the first wicket. Sai Kishore caught debutant Bairstow, who scored 47 runs off 22 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes, off Gerald Coetzee’s bowling. Rohit then joined Suryakumar Yadav, and together they added 59 runs in 34 balls. Suryakumar faced 20 balls and scored 33 before getting out.


Rohit Sharma completed his half-century in 28 balls during the match. He also reached the milestone of 300 sixes in the IPL, becoming the first active player to do so, now holding a total of 302 sixes. Chris Gayle holds the record for most sixes in the IPL. Rohit then added 43 runs in 22 balls with Tilak Varma for the third wicket.


The former captain scored 81 runs off 50 balls, including nine fours and four sixes. Tilak scored 25 runs off 11 balls before getting out, and Naman Dheer added nine runs. Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 22 runs off nine balls, hitting three sixes, while Mitchell Santner remained not out without scoring. For Gujarat, Prasidh Krishna and Sai Kishore took two wickets each, and Mohammad Siraj took one wicket.
