KATHMANDU, May 25: As the pre-monsoon season sets in, the country prepares for the upcoming monsoon, which experts estimate will affect 2 million people from 450,000 households across Nepal.

Using the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM)'s forecast and analyzing all relevant factors, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) has drafted the proposed National Monsoon Preparedness and Response Plan, 2082 BS, reflecting this estimate.

NDRRMA Spokesperson Rambahadur KC said the plan expects about 10 percent of the affected population will need rescue and relief assistance. "We estimate that 2 million people will be affected nationwide, impacting all provinces. We have assigned regional responsibilities accordingly and prepared the plan by assessing current resources and identifying additional needs," he explained.

Spokesperson KC added that the Executive Committee of NDRRMA, chaired by the Home Minister, will review the plan at its meeting on May 28. Once approved, authorities at central, provincial, district, and local levels will begin implementation. The plan also includes monthly monitoring, evaluation, and review of disaster situations.

The DHM has forecast above-average rainfall alongside higher maximum and minimum temperatures this monsoon season. Based on this forecast, the NDRRMA consulted representatives from all relevant sectors to prepare the national disaster response plan.

The DHM identified the eastern part of Karnali Province, northern Lumbini Province, and most areas of Gandaki Province as likely to receive heavier rainfall. Spokesperson Bibhuti Pokharel said that from June 1 to September 30, most parts of Nepal will experience above-average rainfall, with temperatures rising beyond the usual range nationwide.

She further said that Karnali's eastern region, northern Lumbini, and most of Gandaki have a 55 to 65 percent chance of above-average rainfall. The southern Sudurpashchim, western Lumbini, northeastern Gandaki, and northern Bagmati and Koshi Provinces have a 45 to 55 percent chance. Meanwhile, eastern and southern Madhesh and other parts of the country have a 35 to 45 percent chance of above-average rainfall, according to DHM.
