KATHMANDU, Sept 19: The Madheshi Commission has stressed the need to integrate moral education into Nepal’s school curricula, arguing that it is essential for fostering social harmony and positive transformation.
Submitting its annual report to President Ram Chandra Paudel on Friday, the Commission highlighted a campaign it launched under the theme “Madheshi Commission’s Aspiration: A Moral Madhesh and an Empowered Moral Education Program.” The initiative was carried out in Sunsari, Saptari, Dhanusha, and Bara districts of Koshi and Madhesh provinces, as well as Rupandehi, Nawalparasi, and Kapilvastu districts of Lumbini Province.

Drawing on feedback collected during the campaign, the Commission said moral education could play a pivotal role in addressing growing social challenges. “Today’s society is plagued by narrow thinking rooted in self-interest, greed, anger, conflict, intolerance, communalism, and caste- and religion-based discrimination,” the report noted, adding that moral education could help counter such divisions.
The Commission argued that individuals with strong moral values can guide communities forward by promoting integrity, humility, compassion, respect, and altruism.
It has recommended that moral education be made a compulsory subject in the national curriculum to strengthen families, foster responsible citizenship, and build a morally conscious society.
