Locals join reconstruction of police stations; 218 offices damaged in Kathmandu Valley

KATHMANDU, Sept 16: Following the vandalism during the Gen Z protests on September 8 and 9, local residents have begun efforts to rebuild damaged police infrastructure.



In Koteshwor, the Kotdevi Vidyanagar Social Reform Committee coordinated the reconstruction of the Narephat Police Post, also donating a motorcycle to the station. Similarly, reconstruction work has started at the Basundhara Police Outpost to ensure security during the upcoming festival season. The work is being led by a team organized under young entrepreneur Deepak Bhatt.


The Kathmandu Metropolitan Police Station at Lainchaur has also been rebuilt with support from the Thamel Tourism Development Council and local businesses. According to the council’s vice-chair, Sahadev Dhamala, the Lainchaur station plays a key role in maintaining security in the Thamel area.

Reconstruction of the Traffic Police Outpost at New Bus Park has also begun, coordinated by local organizations, transport operators, and workers in the area.


Outside the valley, seven out of eleven police posts damaged by arson and vandalism in Dhading have already been rebuilt, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhesraj Rijal.


Inside the Kathmandu Valley, Police Senior Superintendent Shekhar Khanal reported that 218 police offices were affected during the protests: 112 were completely destroyed while 96 suffered partial damage. Additionally, 117 four-wheeled vehicles were completely damaged, four partially damaged, and 158 two-wheeled vehicles were affected.


Deputy Inspector General of Police Binod Ghimire said verification of the damage to police offices and vehicles is ongoing. In several locations, reconstruction of damaged police facilities has already begun, allowing police to resume duty.
