KATHMANDU, April 27: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) remained closed on Sunday to mourn the death of its former Deputy mayor Tirtha Ram Dangol, who died on Friday.
A Nepali Congress activist and leader, Dangol was elected the Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Nagar Panchayat in 1986, four years before Nepal transitioned to multiparty democracy in 1990. At the time, the country was directly ruled by the monarch and Dangol contested the election alongside another Congress leader Ananada Mohan Bhattarai, who had stood as pro-democracy candidate for the position of Mayor. Both Bhattarai and Dangol were elected.

The metropolis said the holiday has been declared to honor Dangol’s contributions to city development, urban management, promotion, and social services during his tenure.
All offices under the metropolis, except for essential services, are closed today. Dangol’s funeral was held yesterday at Teku.
