Kerung offering job opportunities to locals of Rasuwa

RASUWA, Jan 13: Around 10,000 residents of Rasuwa district shares its border with the Tibet autonomous region of China have acquired the Chinese passes till date.

RASUWA, Jan 13: Around 10,000 residents of Rasuwa district shares its border with the Tibet autonomous region of China have acquired the Chinese passes till date.



There is a provision under which residents of the district can acquire the Chinese pass (Nepal China Immigration Permit Letter) which allows them to travel as far as Kerung in China. The people who possess the pass are allowed to reside in Kerung for a year. 


Around 10,000 locals of Rasuwa have acquired the Chinese passes since Kerung has a prospect for employment. The Rasuwa-based office of the Department of Immigration confirmed that it has issued the passes to 9,845 residents of Rasuwa since it started issuing such passes from October 15, 2015. Before that, the District Administration Office, Rasuwa used to issue the pass.

The trend of going to Kerung for employment has increased in the recent days since the locals do not require passport and the pay in Kerung is good. There are about 1,000 Nepali citizens currently working in Kerung.


After getting the pass that allows them to travel to Kerung, Nepali citizens have been finding works at hotels, dance bars, and transport and construction companies. 


“The Nepali citizens working in Kerung return home to celebrate Dashain, Tihar, and Lhoshar,” said Purushottam Paudel, a Nepali citizen currently working in Kerung.


He added that people in Rasuwa have now started to prefer going to Kerung rather than the Gulf countries for employment. According to Paudel, there are about 500 Nepali girls working in hotels and dance bars in Kerung out of which, about 300 are from Rasuwa.


“The Nepali girls generally work in hotels in the day and at dance bars at night,” a Nepali girl currently working in Kerung said, adding.
