KATHMANDU, April 12: The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) World Executive Board, meeting in London, UK, has discussed the ongoing teachers' movement in Nepal. The movement has seen teachers across the country take to the streets, demanding the introduction of the long-awaited School Education Act.
Ajay Kumar Rai, general secretary of the Nepal Trade Union Congress, raised the issue during the meeting. He criticized Nepal's political leadership for showing indifference towards workers' concerns. Referring to teachers as intellectual workers, he expressed concern that the situation had forced thousands of teachers nationwide to gather in Kathmandu for protests.

ITF President Paddy Crumlin pledged solidarity with the teachers' struggle and extended goodwill and support from the global labor movement.
Teachers launched their protest after the government failed to implement an agreement it signed last year for implementing the School Education Act. The government has now started talks with the teachers. Organizations like Education International have also voiced their support for the movement.
