I’m a difficult man: Deuba

“What I do or don’t do is my own decision,” Deuba asserted. “I’m not the kind of person who steps down just because someone says so. I’m a difficult man, you know.”

KATHMANDU, July 8: In Nepal’s political landscape, most of the leaders don’t want to acknowledge their nature or tendencies. But sometimes, politicians speak candidly. One such moment came from Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba, who described himself as a “difficult man.”

Responding to party General Secretary Bishwo Prakash Sharma’s suggestion that Deuba should gracefully step aside from the prime ministerial race, Deuba said, “I’m not someone who quits just because I’m told to. I’m a difficult man.”

The remark came during the NC Central Working Committee meeting on Monday, where Sharma praised Deuba’s leadership but also suggested the party should present a new face for the premiership by June 2026, implying it was time for Deuba to step down.

Sharma had earlier lauded Deuba’s recent comment in Chitwan, where Deuba had expressed, “I feel like retiring from politics. I want to unite the Congress.” However, Deuba appeared unimpressed by the suggestion coming from Sharma—who recently failed to summit Mt. Everest and had to turn back midway—that he should step down to preserve the party’s dignity, likening it to maintaining the height of Everest.

“What I do or don’t do is my own decision,” Deuba asserted. “I’m not the kind of person who steps down just because someone says so. I’m a difficult man, you know.”
