KATHMANDU, May 15: The government has decided to extend the deadline for the under-construction parliament building only after receiving a clear action plan and commitment to complete the work.
During a meeting held to discuss the progress of the under-construction Federal Parliament Building in Singha Durbar, Minister for Urban Development Prakash Man Singh clarified that the deadline will no longer be extended merely for the sake of extension.

He stated, “The deadline will no longer be extended just for the sake of extension. Discussions are currently underway in the ministry to ensure that the work is completed after the last extension.”
“Since there is a legal provision for deadline extension, we are moving forward with the condition that an extension will only be granted after receiving a clear work calendar — detailing what tasks will be done, in how many days, according to each section of the building, and how many workers will be involved and how they will carry out the work. If this still doesn’t work, we will proceed according to legal provisions, including penalties,” he added.
Minister Singh stated that the government would move forward based on the committee's recommendations regarding how to hold the construction company accountable. During the meeting, members of the committee emphasized that, as per the Public Procurement Regulations, there is a legal basis for extending the deadline, but the same construction company must be held responsible and the work should be completed swiftly.
The deadline for the construction of the Federal Parliament Building expired on March 31. In the meeting, Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development, Gopal Sigdel, said that although the construction company had requested a one-year extension, the ministry is preparing to grant a maximum extension of only 200 days. He added that the company has already been summoned and instructed to submit a detailed work plan to complete the project within this period.
