KATHMANDU, May 15: Despite objections from the victims' side, officials have been appointed to two officers in transitional justice (TJ) commissions.
Former Attorney General Mahesh Thapa has been appointed Chairperson of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), while former Chief Secretary Lila Devi Gadtaula has been appointed Chairperson of the Commission for the Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP).

The appointments were made by the cabinet on Wednesday based on a proposal by the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. In total, 10 officials — including chairpersons and members — have been appointed to the two commissions.
The members appointed to the TRC are Achyut Prasad Bhandari, Tika Prasad Dhakal, Padam Bahadur Shahi and Kumari Kaushalya Ojha. For the CIEDP, the members appointed include Gopal Nath Yogi, Agni Prasad Thapaliya, Shreejana Pokharel and Binita Nepali.
To select officials for the commissions, the government had formed a recommendation committee chaired by former Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra for the second time in Chaitra (mid-March–mid-April). Based on the committee's recommendations, the Cabinet finalized the appointments on Wednesday.
The term of office for the appointed officials is four years.
