KATHMANDU, Aug 13: The government has pledged to take stern action against those individuals who assume public positions and delay in submission of their property details.

Issuing a circular to all sub-national governments and the Department of National Personnel Records (Civil) on Wednesday, the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration has asked the concerned agencies to collect the property details of public position holders prior to the date from which they assume offices.

Earlier, the National Vigilance Center (NVC) had shown concern over the rising cases of non-submission of the property details of the civil servants. Following the incident, the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority also recommended the government to take property details of the government officials starting their designated works in advance.

According to the NVC’s report, a total of 5,504 civil servants in all three tier governments did not submit their property details in the fiscal year 2023/24. Out of the 781,353 government employees, only 775,849 officials followed the government rule.

The Prevention of Corruption Act 2002 has maintained the provision that the civil servants need to disclose their property details within 60 days from the date that they take the charge of offices. Thereafter, the property details have to be sent within 60 days after the end of every fiscal year. Anyone not complying with the state law is subjected to face investigation from the concerned government body while being slapped with a cash fine of Rs 10,000.
