The police arrested the suspects in connection with the murder: the victim Pandit's girlfriend, 25-year-old Najima Khatun from Chiran Tol, Ishwarpur Municipality-6; her husband, 29-year-old Mostakim Ansari; 43-year-old Mohammad Hussen Momin; 40-year-old Suyab Ansari; 25-year-old Konur Alam Ansari; and 54-year-old Salauddin Ansari. Police said all the suspects are relatives. They arrested them on May 12.
Police say Pandit and Khatun had been in a long-term relationship. Khatun, a mother of three, and the unmarried Pandit left home for India on April 1, planning to marry. On the night of April 1, 2025, at 11 PM, Mostakim Ansari reported Khatun missing to the Kesharganj Police Station on May 9.
Villagers revealed that Pandit had taken Khatun to India. After they both returned to Nepal on May 2, locals arranged for Khatun to stay at home. However, Pandit repeatedly visited Khatun's house. The police claim these visits caused Khatun mental stress, prompting her relatives to plan the murder.
According to the police, Khatun called Pandit to meet near the Phuljor Baba Temple at 8 a.m. on May 11. Both went towards the Phuljor Khola, and the other suspects followed them. Police say the suspects murdered Pandit by suffocating him at 9 a.m. that same day, according to preliminary investigations.
Pandit, who had been missing since May 7, was killed on May 11. After murdering him, the suspects covered the body with grass and thorny bushes. They dumped the body in the Ukhubari area of Thakariya Chauri at 9 p.m. on May 12. Police recovered the decomposed body on May 14.
Police Deputy Superintendent Saroj Rai said the Sarlahi District Court extended the investigation period by seven days and continues investigating all suspects, including Khatun, for culpable homicide.
