KATHMANDU, Sept 25: Gen-Z movement leader Rakshya Bam said that while talk of restoring the monarchy keeps resurfacing in the country at times, her generation has no wish to return to royal rule.
“People at the grassroots sometimes bring up the issue of monarchy,” speaking at the Nagarik Frontline on Wednesday, she said, “But why would we need a king? We are breathing freely in a democracy and have no desire to breathe under a monarchy.”

Reviving the monarchy, she stressed, is neither a demand nor a mandate of her generation. “It’s not our agenda,” she added. “We’ve reached this point by standing firmly on the current constitution and system.”
Bam also alleged that infiltrators were behind the violence during the September 8–9 protests, stressing that Gen-Z activists had taken to the streets solely for peaceful demonstrations. Acts of arson and vandalism—whether targeting government offices, private property, or the homes of political leaders—“are not the spirit of Gen-Z,” she said. “Why would we burn or destroy structures we may need in the future?”
Noting how older generations often mock youths for not knowing the names of current ministers, Bam questioned claims that young protesters could target politicians’ residences. “They say we don’t even know who the finance minister or the prime minister is,” she said. “So how could we possibly track leaders’ houses alley by alley?”
